Cyclists

The ACT is an Excellent place for Cycling

We have an extensive cycle path network available for both recreation and transport. Cycling is an excellent way to get around and maintain health and fitness.

  • Senior cyclists appear to have a very low accident rate.
  • A survey conducted by Pedalpower suggests that "Senior Cyclists" are cautious about riding on the road.

Data about cyclist accident rates and issues for the ACT is not readily available, but information from Western Australia suggests that accidents by older cyclists are most likely to occur:

  • During the daylight hours
  • On major arterial roads
  • Where there are no traffic signs or traffic control measures

Safety Tips for Cyclists

  • Consider your fitness to ride and make adjustments accordingly.
  • Always wear a helmet designed to Australian Standards and ensure it is fastened appropriately.
  • Consider gloves designed for use with bicycles, especially in colder months when temperatures can cause tightness in fingers.
  • Wear bright clothing, and consider fluorescent flags and other items to make your bicycle visible.
  • If you ride at night ensure you have adequate lighting on your bike.
  • While there is a current trend to make cycle lanes available "on-road", for those most concerned about road safety, use of the "off-road" cycle paths minimises the likelihood of a collision with a motor vehicle.
